First Suspect [Thomas]

I was standing in one of the small rooms with view into the interrogation room and watch as Thomas and Detective Flack are questioning the main suspect of my very first case as a detective. Being new to all this, Mac said I would do the field work and do the lab work of course and then watch as the other detectives interrogate the suspects to observate them and learn a few tatics and also learn to see when people are lying and when someone says the truth. They just finished the interrogation and the door opened and Thomas walks into the small room, standing next to me and watching the suspect in the other room who couldn't see us in here.

Thomas walked out and stood next to Haylen while Flack handcuffed the suspect and took him out, "Learn much?" Thomas asked Haylen in a friendly way as he stood there, this suspect was difficult at first, but Thomas and Flack soon got him, like they always do

"Just learn to never trust a suspect when you feel he's lying. I've seen it in his eyes." I reply.

Thomas nodded, "You saw the way he shifted in his seat?" he asked

"Yes. Indicates that he was nervous." I said in a confident tone. "And normally that indicates he's hiding something."

Thomas nodded, "Very observant detective" he said to her, "Not bad for your first time." he added

"Thank you." I said with a small, but proud smile.
"That's the first thing you learn when it comes to interrogation. Be observant."

"Your welcome" Thomas replied, "Aye lass, that is correct" he added, looking at her, a slight smile on his face as he said that to Haylen

"Ya know when I started my first day as a detective, I was really nervous. There's just so much to learn and so much one can mess up." I told him, seriously.
"But I found it's not that bad. Besides, I can't wait to get to question my first suspect." I grinned.

Thomas smiled a bit, seeing the passion that Haylen had for her new job, "One thing I will tell you: be ready for anything and don't let your guard down." he told her, a hint of parental concern in his voice when he said that

"I'll try to remember that." I told him with a smile. I was happy to have him and his family around, as well as the whole team. I knew I could learn a lot from them.
"Thank you."

"Your welcome lass" Thomas replied, he then walked out to go finish his report, outside, the mother of one of the victims was pacing back and forth, she saw Haylen and walked up to her, "Are you one of the detectives that worked my son's case?" she asked

I looked at the woman standing in front of me and gave her a confirming nod.
"Yes, I am ma'am."

the woman nodded, the composed herself, "Tell me, did my son suffer at all?" she asked, trying to keep it together, but it was obvious that her voice was staring to crack

I looked at the woman before me, feeling and hearing that she was on the edge to a break down so I carefully wrap my arm around her shoulders as I let her to the quiet area at the end of the hallway to sit down and talk to her.
"No. He didn't have to suffer much." I told her in truth, though her son put up a hell of a fight, just like the other two victims.

the woman looked at Haylen, then nodded slowly, starting to relax, "He once told me and his father that if he was to die, he would go down fighting."

"And he did. Put up quite the fight, not giving up till the end." I said in a sad tone. It was the first time that I had to talk to the family of a victim and I found it hard as I knew we detectives just dealt with the facts, but weren't really emotionally involved. It was harder than I thought it would. "I'm sorry that he wasn't the one to win this fight."

the woman nodded, wiping her face, "You have kids detective?" she asked, at the same time, Thomas was walking back to were Haylen and the boy's mother were

I looked up as Thomas appeared giving him a small, sad smile and then turn back to the boy's mother.
"No, but I like to one day." I said quietly.

Thomas nodded back to Haylen when she did that, the woman looked at her, "When you do, guard them with your life and teach them right." she told Haylen

"I will." I said quietly, knowing that when it comes to me having children I might have an amazing husband at my side and amazing friends like Shannon and Thomas to help me with that if needed.

the woman composed herself, then looked at Haylen, "Thank you" she said to her before walking off, Thomas watched her, then walked over to Haylen, "Was that the lads mother?" he asked in a low tone

I watched the woman leave and then looked up at Thomas who stood now in front of me. I took a deep breath.
"Yes." I replied quietly.

Thomas nodded, "I would be lying if I said that part of what we do gets easier." he said in a comforting tone

"Well, I know it's part of the job and you might learn some normal lines to offer, but I hate to say things I don't mean. It was actually harder as I thought it would be." I said and looked up at him with a thankful smile.
